Makey Makey: Sparkfun, a partner with the Imagination Foundation sent us some amazing tools to use for our meeting. They sent several Makey Makey's. A Makey Makey is an invention kit that turns everyday objects into touchpads and combines them with the Internet. We had so much fun experimenting with different objects such as fruit, playdoh, and school supplies.

Take Apart Day: This meeting was full of parts...screws, nuts and bolts, plastic, and metal. We had so much fun taking apart all sorts of objects from toys to alarm clocks. It was so neat to see what was inside some of the things we use everyday!

Cardboard...cardboard...and more cardboard: Today we worked on new cardboard creations. Since this is the second time we are working with cardboard, we had a better idea of how to get started.

Inventions and little bits: Today was exciting for two reasons. First, we got to experiment with little bits--circuits that will allow us to create bigger projects once we get the hang of them. And second, we presented our inventions to our parents. So many wonderful ideas!

Easter STEM: Since yesterday we celebrated Easter, we were given some holiday challenges. First, we had to create a tall free-standing tower using only jelly beans and toothpicks. Then, we built an Easter basket that could hold 10 plastic eggs. Last, we were challenged to build a "luxury" boat for Mr. Bunny Peep.

Black lines, Legos, and Inventions: Our first activity today was to create a drawing using a single black line. Each drawing had to use eight colors and be original. Next, we were given a bag of Legos and asked to put them together without directions. Most groups were able to create the object...however some needed to use the box or sheet of directions. Last we got to work on our inventions.

Tinkering: This chapter meeting was full of action. First we were challenged to create solar robots, build circuits, and create a solar energy panel. Then we experimented with the snap circuits again and finally started working on our inventions.

Mazes, Inventing, and Ozobots: Last week, we created marble mazes--today we tried them out. All groups successfully created a working maze in a box! Then we found out about the Imagination Foundation's Inventor's Challenge and began thinking about ideas that we could create/build. After putting a lot of thought into our future projects, we took out the Ozobots and had fun creating paths for them to follow.

Marble Mazes: Today was a maze kind of day. First we were given mazes to complete independently. Then we created a design for a marble maze in a cardboard box. Next we were put in groups, given materials, and got right to work. Since we used liquid glue, we are going to test out the maze next week...

Paper Chains and Harry: We welcomed another new member to our chapter today and then completed two challenges. The first--to build the longest paper chain using a large piece of construction paper, tape, and scissors. The second-to build a perch for Harry (a little googly eyed friend) so he could see high above a desk.

Newspaper Forts: Today we welcomed a new member to our chapter and then got to work building newspaper forts. The objective was to build a structure out of newspaper that could hold two members of a three person group. Several groups struggled to get their structure to stand up---a learning experience that we might have to try again!

Toilet paper tubes and cards: Our first day back after winter break was busy. First, each of us was challenged to create a toy with moving parts out of a toilet paper tube. Then, we worked in groups to create a tower using playing cards. That proved to be a difficult task for us...so, instead of building up, we built across.

Holiday STEM: Being so close to the Christmas break, we were challenged to work in teams to create different structures. First up was building an igloo out of sugar cubes. Then we built a gumdrop tower, car for Santa, and finally a gingerbread man trap.

Hour of Code: Today's meeting took place in our computer lab. We were challenged to learn computer science by writing code. We watched tutorials to show us how connecting directions such as move forward, or turn 180 degrees helps programers create video games. Code writing was fun--we were able to "play" with characters from Minecraft, Star Wars, Frozen, and Angry Birds. We will definitely visit code.org again for more lessons!

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas A. Edison
Conveyor Belts: This week, we were challenged to make a candy conveyor belt. After watching videos and looking at pictures, we used a variety of materials to "try" to make Skittles move across a working belt. Our challenge proved to be unsuccessful. Perhaps we can do a little more research before trying the task again!

Snap Circuits: This week we experimented with snap circuit kits. We discussed electricity and watched a Brain Pop Video before working in small groups. Each group followed project guidelines to create interactive circuits. We had a great time experimenting with lights, sounds, and fans!

Infinity Tiles and Flip Books: For our meeting this week, students used markers to color sections of infinity tiles. When cut apart, these tiles can be arranged in any order to create matching patterns. We even used blank templates to create our own tiles! After using our newly colored tiles, we experimented with creating flip books. Students drew one picture that changed a little on consecutive pages. The result...a mini moving picture.

This week, we had a chance to experiment more with the Ozobots.
Students were challenged to make a game. The rules were--you must
have a game title, use seven codes, and write directions. Students were
paired up and got to work immediately. Most of the teams selected
to use two Ozobots for the challenge. The Ozobots were used so much
that they had to be charged before we could actually play the games!

We all had an AMAZING time playing games, seeing creations, and just having fun! There were so many different types of ideas displayed!
I am so proud of this Chapter and how hard they have worked over the past several weeks. They continue to inspire me to CREATE incredible projects and ideas for them! :) Mrs. Walrath

For everyone that came out today--Thank you for making this such an exciting day for the students. We are so lucky to have your support and cannot wait to show you what we can do in the future!!!

We all had a great time meeting each other, discussing ideas, and completing our first challenge.
The Challenge: Build the tallest free standing structure using 10 straws, 10 marshmallows, and a pair of scissors.
While all of the structures had trouble "standing," we all had fun trying. Next week, we will be using different materials to try the same challenge!
